A Medical Assistant Cover Letter – How to Write a Good One

Medical Assistant Cover LetterWhen you have your resume written, the next thing to spend time on is putting together a good medical assistant  cover letter. The cover letter is the first thing a prospective employer is going to see. It needs to catch their attention. You might say the cover letter is more important that the resume initially.

There are several different kinds of cover letters so you need to think about what is you are trying to do with the letter. Be sure to choose the type of cover letter that reflects what you are trying to accomplish. Your letter should be specifically designed for that purpose and customized for each position you seek.

Letters of Application – This is one of the most common. Its purpose is to clearly and succinctly explain what job you are applying for, why you are qualified for the position and why you should get an interview. It will explain why you are interested in this organization. It outlines your most relevant skills or experience.

Letters of Inquiry – You might use this type of letter if you are interested in an organization but they haven’t posted any job openings.  Cover letters of this type should clearly highlight why you are interested in this organization and why your skills and experience would be a good fit. Be sure to have your contact information included and let them know how you will follow up with them.

Referral Cover Letters – If you happen to have a referral consider yourself lucky. It can be a big door opener. Employers are more likely to a closer look at someone that is being referred by someone they know. Make sure you let them know who referred you what your relationship is to them – how you happen to know them.

Follow the outline below to create your own customized cover letter template.

      Opening Salutation:

                               Dear Dr./Mr./Ms. Last Name

    Body – First Paragraph:

The purpose of the first paragraph is to catch the attention of the reader and convince them you should get an interview. Make sure you identify the position you are applying for and identify any mutual contacts if you have any.

                Body – Middle Paragraphs:

Here is where you outline what you specifically have to offer your employer.
This is where you match your skills and experience to the needs of the organization. Don’t just repeat your resume. Explain why what’s on your resume is important to them. Use short summary paragraphs or bullet points.

                Final Paragraph:

End the letter by thanking the employer for considering you for the job. Let them know you will be following up with them and how. Be sure to set s time frame in which they should expect to hear from you. Don’t let it be longer than a week unless there are special circumstances to consider.

Most people don’t spend the time it takes to create a compelling cover letter. This is a big mistake. This is your one big chance to get an opportunity for an interview. You don’t want to miss it. If you don’t get the interview you won’t get the job.

Another mistake people make is not customizing their resume and their cover letter. Yes it takes more time, but again it’s worth it in the long run. Take the time.  Do it right.
