As might be expected the Birmingham area ranks the highest in terms of current employment. This is followed by Columbus, Mobile, Montgomery and Huntsville in that order for the top five areas. The Florence-Muscle Shoals area ranks the lowest with an average annual salary of $20,400.

Birmingham also has the highest average annual salary at $27,420. The Decatur area while it has considerably less employment has the second highest average annual salary for medical assistants at $26,280. Huntsville, Auburn-Opelika and Columbus round out the top five areas with highest salaries.

There are few interesting things to note. The Auburn-Opelika area while it has the lowest in terms of medical assistant jobs, it ranks fourth in the state in terms of average salaries.

The average hourly wage rate in Alabama is $11.95 per hour. The median hourly rate is slightly lower at $11.72 per hour.
