Medical Assistant Salary and Jobs Data for the State of Iowa

The state ranks about in the middle for both employment and salary. Overall the state ranks 33rd for employment level with 4,480 current jobs.

It ranks slightly higher among the states for average annual salary at 27th. State wide the average annual salary in Iowa is about $29,700.

The highest employment of medical assistants in the state is found in the Omaha-Council Bluffs metropolitan area with 1580 jobs. This area covers portions of both Iowa and Nebraska. The Des Moines – West Des Moines area has the second highest employment level in the state. This is not surprising since these are the two largest metropolitan areas.

At the low end is Dubuque with employment of about 170 and Ames at 110.

There is a much different ranking of metropolitan areas for average annual salary. The Iowa City area has the highest average annual salary in the state at $33,600. This is followed by the Des Moines area at $32,570 and Ames at $30780. The Omaha-Council Bluffs area is fourth at $29,940.

The lowest average annual salaries are in the Sioux City area with $27,030 and Davenport-Moline-Rock Island area at $26,140.

There is also information for nonmetropolitan areas in the state. The state is divided into 4 areas – Northwest Iowa, Southwest Iowa, Southeast Iowa and Northeast Iowa.
