Louisiana ranks 28th among the 50 states for the number of medical assistant jobs. It has about 6800 across the state. It only ranks 46th for the average annual salary. Its average annual salary is $26,560.

As you might expect the New Orleans-Metairie-Kenner metropolitan area has the highest concentration of medical assistant employment in the state with just under 2100 jobs. This is followed by the Baton Rouge and Lafayette areas with just under 1100 in Baton Rouge and about 600 in Lafayette.

At the bottom of the list is Alexandria with 200 jobs and Monroe with about 170.

When you look at the average annual salary data across the state you notice there is a fairly wide range.

The New Orleans-Metairie-Kenner area has the highest salaries at $29,350. Baton Rouge is next at $27,340 and Shreveport-Bossier City follows with$26,980 rounding out the top three areas of highest salaries.

Of the metropolitan areas, Monroe with an average annual salary of $23,770 and Lake Charles with $22,800 are the two lowest salary areas.

The range across the state goes from the highest of $29,350 in New Orleans to $20,990 in the nonmetropolitan area of New Iberia.
