The State of Maine ranks 38th among the states for medical assistant employment. The state has around 2800 medical assistant jobs.
In terms of average annual salary, the news is better. Maine ranks 21st among the states for average annual salaries.

The Portland-South Portland-Biddeford area has the largest number of medical assistant jobs in the state at just over 900. What’s interesting is that the Southwest area of Maine, outside the metropolitan areas has almost the same number of jobs.
At the low end is the Lewiston-Auburn area with just over 200 jobs and the Portsmouth area at about 100.
Looking at the average annual salary information, you notice there is a very narrow range across all areas. The Rochester-Dover area has the highest salaries at $32,770. Keep in mind here that this area takes in a part of both New Hampshire and Maine.
Of the metropolitan areas the Lewiston-Auburn area has the lowest average annual salary at $29,430.
With a narrow salary range such as found in Maine, you would expect to find reasonably comparative salaries throughout the state as you do your job search.
