Medical Assistant Salary and Jobs Data for Michigan


Michigan State SealFor anyone looking for a medical assistant’s job in the state of Michigan, here is some employment and salary information that might surprise you. First, Michigan ranks 6th in the country for employment of medical assistants. That’s quite good. But it only ranks 35th in the country for average annual salary for medical assistants.

Employment across the state is just over 21,800 according to the latest information available from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Its average annual salary across the state is $28,410. These numbers however, don’t tell the whole story.

Looking first at employment, the Detroit-Warren-Livonia area has the highest employment of medical assistants at just over 10,600. The Warren-Troy-Farmington Hills area is second with 6800 jobs. Given the way the data is grouped, there is some minor overlap in the area included.

At the low end of employment levels is Monroe with about 180 employed and Bay City with about 150.

When you look at average annual salary data there are some interesting things to note. First the city with the highest average salaries is Jackson. But Jackson ranked among some of the lowest cities for the level of employment. Average salary in Jackson is $32,500.

Second, the Detroit-Warren-Livonia area which had the highest employment level ranks only 12th in the state for average salary. This area has an average salary of$28,320. The second highest salary level is found outside of any metropolitan area. It is the northwest lower peninsula of Michigan with a salary average of $31,090.

The lowest average salaries in metropolitan areas can be found In Monroe and Bay City. Outside of the metropolitan areas the lowest salaries in the state are in the Northeast lower peninsula and the upper peninsula of the state.

While most of the jobs are located in the larger metropolitan areas this shows that if you want the highest salaries in the state, the job opportunities in the smaller cities might be a better choice.
