Looking first at employment, the Minneapolis-St. Paul area has the highest employment of medical assistants in the state. Being the largest metropolitan area this should not be a surprise. Employment here is just over 6,100. It is by far the largest concentration of jobs.

At the other end, the northeast Minnesota nonmetropolitan area and the area around Grand Forks has the lowest employment – both under 100 jobs. You will note that because of the way the Bureau of Labor Statistics groups metropolitan areas there is some overlap across state boundaries.

For average annual salary for the Rochester area is the highest with an average of $39,320. This is one of the highest average salaries in the country. This is good news for those looking for a job in this area. The Minneapolis-St. Paul area is second with an average of $33,260.

At the lower end of the salary range is the Fargo area and the Southeast Minnesota nonmetropolitan area. Average salaries here are $27,680 and $26,650 respectively.

One thing to note in this information is that the spread of average salaries across the state is quite large ranging from the high of $39,320 to the low of $26,650. This means that where your job is located in the state might have a significant impact on the pay scale.

But remember, these numbers are estimates. The actual pay for any given job is influenced by many factors. You are likely to find significant variation from job to job. Start your job search with a good resume to present your qualifications in the best way possible.  Putting in the effort will pay off.
