The largest area of medical assistant jobs is found in the Charlotte-Gastonia-Rock Hill area. The employment level there is just over 2600 jobs. This is followed by the Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News area with a little over 2500 jobs.

The metropolitan area that has the fewest number of medical assisting jobs is in Rocky Mount with just 130 jobs. The Goldsboro, Burlington and Jacksonville areas are also on the low end of the list.

If you look at the average annual salary for medical assistants there is a slightly different ranking. The Wilmington area has the highest average salary at $30,560. Other comparable areas include Winston-Salem at $30,540, Durham-Chapel Hill at $30,150 and Raleigh-Cary at $30,130.

At the other end of the scale are Rocky Mount, Goldsboro and Fayetteville with average annual salaries of $26,710, $25,340 and $25,140 respectively.

If you are looking for medical assistant jobs outside the major cities you will find the highest salaries in the Western Central North Carolina area at $28,600.
