Medical Assistant Salary and Jobs Information for Tennessee

Tennessee State SealIf you are looking for a medical assistant’s job in Tennessee there are a good number to be found. Tennessee ranks 15th in the country for medical assistant employment according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

For average annual salaries of medical assistants it does not rank as well. Tennessee ranks 39th in terms of average salaries. But state wide numbers don’t always tell the whole story. Tennessee is a diverse state so you need to look at more detailed information that shows where the jobs are in the state and where the highest salaries will be found.

Let’s look first at employment in Tennessee. It is probably no surprise that the Nashville area which includes Davidson, Murfreesboro and Franklin has the highest number of medical assistants at just over 3,800. The Memphis area comes in second with 2,400 jobs.

At the other end of the employment scale are Clarksville, Cleveland and Morristown with employment of 280, 220 and 170 respectively.

When we look at average annual salaries the rankings don’t change too much. The Nashville area is still on top with average salaries of $30,920. Memphis again comes in second at $29,170. The Knoxville area is third at $28,100.

At the other end of the salary range we see a little difference. The three areas with lowest average salaries are Cleveland, Johnson City and Jackson. Their average salaries are $25,470, $23,900 and $23,270 respectively.

One of the nonmetropolitan areas actually ranks quite well. The Eastern Tennessee area ranks 5th in average annual salary at $26,990. This shows that all the good paying jobs in the state are not just in the major cities.

With all numbers like this you have to know how to interpret them. They should be used as a guide as to what you might expect in your job search. Since these numbers are averages, you might jobs that vary significantly from these.

The best thing you can do to get the best jobs out there is to prepare yourself to stand out in the crowd. The job market is getting more competitive every day. Make sure you get the proper medical assistant training that will allow you to get certified as a medical assistant. Then prepare a good resume and cover letter that will show prospective employers you are their best choice for that job. Put in the effort to do this well and it will pay off.
