Certainly the areas that you expect the highest employment of medical assistants would be the Washington DC area. This is in fact the case. This metropolitan area has over 6,200 reported medical assistant jobs. A distant second is the Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News area with about 2,500 jobs.

The metropolitan areas with the fewest jobs are Danville and Harrisonburg with 130 and 110 respectively.

Sometimes the area with most jobs is not the area with the highest average salaries. In the case of Virginia this is not so. The Washington area has the most jobs and the highest average salaries. Average salaries in the Washington area are almost $35,000. The Richmond area which has the third highest number of jobs has an average salary of about $30,000.

The Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News area which has the second highest number of jobs has an average salary of $27,690. The metropolitan area with the lowest average salary is the Lynchburg area at $26,170.

The lowest salaries in the state are found outside the major cities in the Southern and Southwestern parts of the state. Here the average salaries stand at $25,490 and $23,760. Virginia has one of the widest ranges of average salaries of any state in the country. Where you will be looking for a job might make a significant difference in the salary.
