The first thing you must recognize is that because of the way the data is reported by major population centers you will find many overlapping states. The most obvious is the Washington data. This would indicate that the highest employment and salaries in West Virginia are in this area. While this is true, most of those jobs are not totally in West Virginia. But if you live and work in this area the news is very good for employment and the salary you might find.

Disregarding that area, the Charleston area has the highest number of medical assistants employed at about 830. The Huntington-Ashland area comes in next at 740 jobs.

At the other end of the employment range are Cumberland and the Steubenville-Weirton area with 150 and 100 jobs respectively.

Looking at the average annual salary data outside of the Washington area you see something interesting. The Cumberland area which has a low number of jobs has the highest average salary at $27,830. The Charleston Area which had the largest number of jobs has an average salary of $24,690.

Of the major metropolitan areas, The Parkersburg-Marietta-Vienna area has the lowest average salaries at $23,060.
